Sofa Bed, Circa 1895
A folding sofa bed from about 1895, brought back from barn-find condition with frame repairs, refinished oak and new leather.
- Era
- About 1895
- Work
- Frame and veneer repair, refinishing, hardware, springs and upholstery
- Materials
- Hickory reinforcement, aniline dye, lacquer, tied springs, wood wool, cotton, leather
This sofa bed arrived in original condition, which Kim described as a barn find: dirty and rusty, with the folding mechanism rusted and bound up and one of its two lift springs missing.
The base was taken apart and reassembled, a broken caster socket was reinforced with hickory, splintered rails were re-glued, and water-damaged veneer was cut away and replaced. The oak was sanded, dyed and lacquered, and the casters, catches and bolts were cleaned and refinished.
The original spring tying was poorly done, so the seat was tied eight ways over new springs and padded with wood wool and cotton before the leather cover went on.
